LOW ISLES TOURS
SV Malaita - Schooner sail to Low Isles
SV Malaita sails daily to Low Isles during the optimum season in Far North Queensland from June through to January. With a maximum of only 22 passengers on Malaita you will enjoy the charm, romance and excitement of schooner sailing the Great Barrier Reef.
The SV Malaita offers you a professional and personalised experience on your visit to Low Isles. The crew is fun, caring and has an enthusiastic approach to imparting their knowledge about the reef and delicate eco-system around Low Isles. It is reputed that the dedicated crew of Malaita actually know many of the local marine life by their first names.
The SV Malaita is tailored so that you have fun while you learn about the pristine reef environment. Experience what it is like to snorkel in paradise, swim with inquisitive and friendly turtles; discover many different types of coral and a countless variety of fish. The two sand coral cays of Low Isles and Woody Island are surrounded by mid shelf reef. Providing a safe sheltered lagoon, the suitability is most favourable for all ages whether you are a novice or experienced snorkeler and swimmer.
The Sailing Vessel Malaita (pronounced Malay-ta) is based on a design derived in the 1920’s from the famous Grand Banks Schooners. The current SV Malaita has been modified for improved sea handling ability in the conditions off coastal Far North Queensland, and is named in honour of the island Malaita where the vessel was constructed.
Departing from the Marina in Port Douglas, the SV Malaita sails the 7.9 nautical miles and moors at Low Isles for a full day island tour. The private mooring site for Malaita at Low Isles is surrounded by ancient pinnacle reef structures which you can discover on a guided snorkel tour or at your leisure. Alternatively you may opt to stay dry and relax on the tropical beach of Low Isles or take in the infinite blue of the Coral Sea with a book and a glass of wine on board the classical yacht.
